Solar Stills for Water (Phase I: 2009-14)
The Solar Still is an innovative, eco-friendly solution designed to convert saline, brackish, or polluted water into safe, potable drinking water using solar energy. One such solar still developed by MCRC, named Thoyam, features a conical shape and uses a Mylar sheet as the transparent cover, replacing the conventional polythene sheet. Mylar was chosen for its superior transparency and UV-resistant properties. Sunlight heats the water in a central basin, causing it to evaporate. The vapor then condenses on the transparent cover and flows into a collection container. The system yields 3-4 litres/ square meter/ day, with a recovery rate of 60-70%. This natural distillation process effectively removes salts, heavy metals, and impurities, providing water that is cleaner than rainwater. This solar still reflects our commitment to sustainable, pollution-free water purification.

| Current Status |
NGOs and SHGs are trained to produce distilled water using solar stills, which they can sell for applications such as battery charging and general use in schools and rural households. In addition, children are being trained to fabricate and install solar stills in their schools, as well as study their effectiveness.
